The most important thing about a family spring break is that it’s meant to be spent laughing, creating memories, and connecting with your loved ones. There’s nothing quite like family time! From eating local to learning about how the town began, here in Forsyth, we want to make sure you have an awesome trip!
If you and your family share a love for history, we have some wonderful historical destinations here in Forsyth that will meet those needs exceptionally.
1. Historic Train Depots: The first on our list is the Stone Train Depot built in the 1850s and the Brick depot in 1899, both of these sites are full of Monroe County history, consisting of an added museum, genealogy room, conductor’s room, and more! Watch trains go by and imagine what it was like during the height of the train era!
2. William Hubbard Complex: The Hubbard Alumni Association (HAA), formed in 1985, had a vision for the campus, and began the work to create a cultural center and interactive museum. In 2015, in partnership with the Monroe County Commissioners, the HAA restored the historic Dormitory for Women and a teacher’s cottage – both now on the National Register for Historic Places. After the partial demolition of the Hubbard Middle School in 2018, the Monroe County Board of Education and the HAA established the Hubbard Museum & Cultural Center in the remaining buildings. Hubbard campus is now named the William Hubbard Complex and houses several agencies to include the Boys & Girls Club and the Telling Our Story: Black History Museum.
3. Court is in Session: The Monroe County Courthouse, built in 1895, is a one-of-a-kind, beautifully restored courthouse. While still in use, the building holds its old infrastructure as well as the Eternal Flame and the Joel Chandler Harris memorial marker making it the perfect place to start a historical tour.
4. See a show: If you like live theater, the Rose Theater is a wonderful place to take in a show. Located on the historic downtown square, be surrounded by history as local theater productions entertain you and your family. The building itself, starting out as a storehouse that was later converted into a Pioneer Picture show theater, has many features from the past. Take a look! http://www.thebacklotplayers.org/
